The Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitate (Wiedemann), or Med fly, is a key multi-host pest in Israel and around the world, attacking over 250 species of fruits and vegetables. The female fly lays eggs in the fruit, in a moist environment containing sugar, where the larvae will hatch and establish themselves after about three days. Each laying contains up to ten eggs, several times a day. After about five days, the larvae are ready to pupate and jump from the fruit into the soil, burrowing to a depth of about five centimeters, and after about nine days, the adults will emerge, living for several weeks to a few months. The adults, against whom pest control operations are carried out in agriculture today, constitute 5% (!) of the total fly stages.
